So today was my first real test  - I went out to dinner with an old friend whom adores his beer and then met up with my boyfriend and a friend of his at a local bar after dinner before we went to go see a movie. At dinner, my friend had several drinks and was surprised when I ordered a diet coke. I explained that I was taking a break from drinking and the concept behind HSM to him and he was quite interested in it! He said that he didn\’t think that he could do it though, as he himself probably drank on average 5 days a week (not to get drunk mind you just a few beers with friends at dinner or what may have you) . So today was pretty easy. I took the train north to Ottawa (I’m currently in Canada visitng my family/my boyfriends for the holidays) from Toronto. Travelling (planes, trains) has always been somewhere that I very muched enjoyed my glass of wine but today I asked for chocolate milk instead and wasn’t tempted at all to drink so that was good! My first test will come in a few days when we go skiing at Tremblant. Some of our good friends are coming down and I know that they want to party really hard – I’m debating just staying in at the hotel room (after all I’ll see them all day skiing and at dinner!) or just going out and having a club soda/lime or some sort of mocktail (like a virgin caesar) My partner seems supportive if hesitant that I’ll be able to do this, but it’s really time for [...]

And here we go on a new adventure

So two days ago an unfortunate personal situation arose that made me decided that it was time to take the step I had been thinking of taking for a while and take a long hard look at my relationship with alcohol.  Doing a ‘cost benefit’ analysis I realized that there were a lot more negatives in my life then there were positives coming from alcohol and while ringing in New Years Eve in my pyjamas and sober I decided last night that it was time for the break. So technically I guess this is ‘Day 2′ but really it seems easier just to make it Day 1 . I’m looking forward to all of the health/relationship/fitness benefits of taking a prolonged break from drinking – though I am nervous about the social aspect.
