I know that many of you have had life-changing experiences doing your HSM. Today, I challenge you to give something back to HSM: Do it again. Do it with a mate. At the end of my first HSM journey last winter, I reflected privately and publicly to the benefits of undertaking 3 months without alcohol. I also unexpectedly committed to repeating the exercise this year. Two weeks ago, I commenced my second HSM journey and this time I’m bringing some friends along for the ride. Two of the team at work are joining me as is one of their partners. My wife – while not officially signing up for HSM – has nonethless undertaken to significantly reducing her intake. Eighteen months ago I watched a grainy poor-lit video of a young man setting out his case for why we should fund his bold idea for a better Australia. His idea was simple; that by persuading thousands of Australians to take a strategic pause from alcohol for three months and reflect on their journey by blogging on a website, we might start a different conversation and ultimately succeed in changing Australia’s drinking culture where so many public health campaigns had faltered. The young man in question was Hello Sunday Morning’s founder and CEO Chris Raine, who, despite the initial production values of his video, ultimately succeeded in persuading us to support him as one of eight winners in our inaugural Bold Ideas Better Lives Challenge.
