1 word. Splendour. Thanks to a friend of mine I managed to score a free ticket to Splendour in the Grass second year running. I think I may have been the only sober person at Woodfordia over those 3 days but it was definitely worth it, because my friends…there is a drug even better than alcohol, and they call it music. Live music to be more specific. I swear when Noah and The Whale came on, everyone within a 20m radius thought I was trashed and on speed, I managed to have a great time amongst highly intoxicated friends. I recommend you all do it at least once because a) I can recall on cue every second of the festival and b) I spent a grand total of $50 on EVERYTHING, including but not limited to ticket, accommodation, food and drinks. Business time… I never thought I was a [...]

Into week 4 and I’m happy to say that I maintained a fairly active social life on the weekend without the help of my trusty sav blanc, although I’m sure Saturday night would have been a bundy rum affair with the Reds winning the Super 15 and all. So to substitute having a drink I have started taking a Chupa Chup with me whenever I go out (strawberry and cream is a personal favourite), it gives me a little sugar hit and kind of replaces the sensation of the whole hand to mouth thing, not that that really matters a great deal (fun fact: did you know Salvador Dali designed the Chupa Chup logo?). This week has been fairly productive in terms of getting my life in order, I have been doing my tax, keeping up correspondence with friends overseas and trying to organise uni and an internship for next [...]

Although I haven’t caved in to the social pressure of having a beverage, excluding the deliciousness that is lemon lime and bitters, I am feeling as though I’m not really testing my will power enough. Thus I have decided that for the next 2 ½ months I am not allowed to turn down any invitation to a social event of the binge drinking variety (within reason that is). This posed a rather large dilemma on the weekend as it was the Reds vs Blues semi-final at Suncorp, for which 9 friends and I had tickets. My family have always been Rugby Union enthusiasts, so it was only natural that after a somewhat arduous 16 year journey we would be there to support the Reds to their first ever home grand final. However if there is one place you don’t want to be sober on a Saturday night, it’s the Caxton. [...]

Today marks day two of my HSM. Last night was trivia night at Archive, our local haunt, and all my friends were out for a mates birthday. One of the many reasons I decided to take a break from drinking was to save money so I can go overseas when I finish uni half way through next year. My friend who works at the bar normally gives us free drinks and when he asked if I wanted my regular glass of Caper Vale Sav Blanc he was definitely shocked that I opted for water instead. So while everyone was getting their buzz on for free I was scribing trivia answers sippin on water (with a twist of lime). I’ve decided to reward myself by using the money I would otherwise spend on alcohol to buy other things I enjoy – music, clothes, movies, etc. So yesterday I strolled into Jet [...]
