Okay, so i kind of relapsed this weekend. My girlfriends and I had our annual girls weekend the weekend and I drank with them on Friday night. It was a conscious decision made by me, not peer pressure. We drank, caught up, talked and danced the night away at the pub downstairs from our hotel. Saturday morning however, was hideous – and it reminded me why I started this challenge in the first place. What a waste of a day! All of us were too tired and hungover to do anything except watch TV, read magazines and eat junk food – and while this sounds like an ideal girls weekend – the panadol and desperate rehydrating while still failing to pee reminded me that it wasn\’t a decision we made by choice (well kind of), but forced upon us by the alcohol on Friday night. We were right next to the beach [...]

Alert and Ready for Action!

Hi HSMers! Well I am almost a month in now – this weekend will be my fourth weekend off the plonk, and i must say – I am loving it! I find myself MUCH more alert, goal focused and physically active. I didn’t realise how much of my life I’ve been wasting on hangover-recovery saturday and sunday mornings (sometimes afternoons) until I began this journey. And although I wouldn’t change all the crazy parties and drunken deep and meaningfuls of my past – not being hungover has certainly given me a new perspective on my life and the possibilities that lay before me. I’ve started parkour (which is rad! – i encourage all to try it!), and one of their rules is… if you’re hungover, you can’t train cause you’re endangering yourself and others – imagine how happy I was when i realised I didn’t have to structure this activity [...]

I did it! I made it through my first weekend with no drinking – and a long weekend at that (which we all know is prime drinking time!). It\’s a slippery slope though and my resolve has already been tested. Luckily I\’d told my good friend that I was doing this challenge and he offered to be my \’support person\’ – to which i replied \’pfffft, as if I need a support person!\’ …. fast forward to arriving at a party at 10pm on Saturday night – walking into an apartment in the city with ten already well-on-their-way party goers … I arrive to a chorus of: friend: \’hey! you\’re late! you need to play catchups!\’ *shots get poured* me: \’no thanks, I\’m not drinking tonight\’ friend: \’what do you mean? oh, OKAY well I\’ll just get you some soft drink and we\’ll only put a LITTLE bit of alcohol [...]

Okay, here we go

Rightio, I’ve done it, I’ve signed up. I read about HSM in the paper on Easter Sunday, while I was drinking coffee and feeling hideously hungover and it struck me, ‘wow, this Chris guy has a bloody brilliant idea’. This sounds stupid but I never actually realised how programmed we are into thinking that drinking goes with everything. It didn’t even cross my mind on Saturday night not to open that first, and then second, bottle of wine because well, it was Saturday and I wanted to have fun and dance. I can’t believe how naive those words sound coming out of my fingertips at 28 years old. I’m also slightly embarassed to say, I am fair sh*tting myself. I don’t know what I’m like in social situations without alcohol. I don’t think, since I turned 18, that I ever been to a party, a wedding, a work do, a [...]
