It was only about three weeks ago that I really considered the role that support networks play within the roles of self-admitted alcoholics. One of my friends who is studying with me in China told me how he signed up only within the last years with Alcoholics Anonymous. What interested me the most was that I didn’t at all consider him part of the AA’s target demographic. He was 28, he was energetic, a traveller, and had a hot Russian girlfriend. Not kind of the guy who I expected to be sitting around in a chaired-circle wearing a texta’d badge declaring his name and opening his first session declaring “I’m an alcoholic.” Then I realised that the way AA was marketed in the US must have been very different from the way it is marketed in Australia.
