HSM Complete!

So today is the 27th of September 2011.Today i have completed my 3 month sober challenge for Hello Sunday Morning, and for myself.I can’t believe how fast it has actually gone. It doesn’t feel like that long ago that i embarked on this journeye of sobriety. I also feel as though i have come a long way. I no longer feel as though i will turn to alcohol to solve my problems with unhappiness. I know this becuase i have had hard times throughout the last few months where all i wanted was a drink, but because i promised myself i didn’t. I kept my promise and i feel as though i will be the one to reap the rewards. I feel very accomplished, like i have done a great thing, that will really benefit me- now and in the long term. I finish my HSM challenge in 10 days! Tuesday night out? To be honest i don’t know how the night is going to go down. I’d like to have a cocktail… i’d like to have a shot… I think its going to get messy. At this point i am thinking that i am just going to accept that the first night out is going to be out of my control. My friends are going to take over, and they promised they would look after me. However after that night, i will be in control and i won’t be drinking as much as i used to. I won’t be drinking to get drunk and i’m going to be having a lot of fun without the prerequisite of getting drunk. My attitudes, i think, will still be different once i am out clubbing and drinking. Tips for when you start.

These are things that i found out in my HSM that helped me cope with not drinking. They are not scientifically proven tips but if you would like to have a go, you are more than welcome to learn from me. – If you are out and everyone else is going to get a drink, go and buy a drink eg a coke, or if you don’t want softdrink, a juice, or a mocktail. – Sometimes just having a drink in your hand can make you have the feeling of drinking. Even if its water, juice, cordial, mocktail or redbull can make you feel like you’re a more normal part of the group. Which is a very different feeling, in comparison to if everyone else around you is drinking and you are standing there semi awkwardly without anything in your hand. – Don’t hate yourself for wanting a drink, thats normal. Still SOBER!

I have been doing my HSM for 2 months and a week. I am quite proud of myself. I don’t tell people to take the 3 months challenge, i ask do they think they could not drink for a night. I challenge them to think about what the HSM sets out to achieve. Not to not drink at all. Just to change the way you incorporate alcohol into everything. The HSM has certainly changed how i see alcohol in every social situation. Sadly, i’ve lost friends over not drinking.They thought it was more important to drink than to accept that i still wanted to go out and get a coke rather than a vodka. I overestimated how close they were to me. I will be interested to see if they suddenly like me again when i finish ini 20 days.
