First Drinks Friday! Celebrating the end of my stint in sobriety
01/07/11 • 0 Comments

Today marks the start of a new chapter in my HSM journey. Having finished my HSM and about to embark on runabout holiday to NY, I’m approaching things with a new perspective. But one I’ll get to writing about in more depth on my 24 hour fly by . In the mean time here’s a celebratory photo of me at the HSM office.   If anyone Brisbaners want to join the celebration, I’ll be at the Bavarian Bier Cafe in Eagle st from 8:30p onwards. Drop by and say hi and have an alco-bevvy or even a mocktail (they make awesome ones). For everyone still powering on with their HSM, my best wishes for you all! Cheers Steve

Identity Drinkers

When you’re the sober one it’s astonishing to see the change from friend to friend when a bit of drinky-drinky is added to the mix. Luckily I’m blessed to be surrounded by joyous drunks. Sure it makes me think I might be missing out but it’s also fulfilling to see mates genuinely happy and bonding. I’ve been pondering this over the last couple of days. For those who’ve experienced the thrills and skills of liquid bravado – has that confidence manifested in your sober nights or adventures out? – and to what degree? PS – the photo is from a great BYO alley venue I used to frequent, sadly the place is long gone but the regulars were always treated like royalty!

A short and sweet one from me, hopefully with a bit of punch. To celebrate the 22nd birthday of one of my old, old friends a sizeable group of us started at little korean BBQ place in the city and then moved along to the Belgian Bier Cafe – a beer lover’s paradise, and a bit of a personal hell for me – but I powered on none-the-less. Despite anticipating a fail for the night, three very positives things happened as a direct result of doing a HSM that really validated my decision. The first was from the head bar tender, who didn’t really understand why I was doing a HSM initially but after  a short explanation, caught on quickly. He then proceeded to spend the next 10 mins experimenting with a series of mocktail ingredients at the bar which was packed with on looking beer lovers. The best [...]

Hello Steve Sanshwe! (5 weeks late, but better than never)

Putting this experience into words is one of those gratifying moments that sets a precursor for conversations to come. What I’m trying to say is, it took me ages to get around to doing this and now that I’m here I’m more confident about presenting a better informed reflection. I started my Hello Sunday Morning on the 1st of April. The series of events that lead up to it were neither profound or extreme but the aftermath validated one of many reasons to do it. To earmark the demolition of a friend’s apartment, we celebrated in true demolition style with a cocktail of copius amounts of alcohol and graffiti art (read: tasteful depictions of dick and balls). After half a carton, tequila shots and dangerous drunk forays onto the rooftop of a high-rise apartment I awoke the next morning feeling a slight loss of memory but none the less without [...]
