Reflecting

I have been wondering why I started drinking again, especially as I was finding it so easy. I only really missed alcohol twice. I had lots of nights out, meals, gigs and a Burn’s night and I was offered so much free alcohol but it was easy to resist. I blamed the fact there was an open bottle of red wine in my kitchen. It was only there for 4 hours before I had a glass! Also I had been quite run down since I stopped. I had a stinking cold and sore throat for over a fortnight which is very rare for me. I have also had intermittent toothache and mouth ulcers and boils. My friend thinks it was my body detoxing from the alcohol. At the end of the day I think I just lack confidence in my willpower. When I stopped smoking 12 years ago the hardest [...]

Had a great time on Burn’s night in Dunecht . Managed the ceileidh dancing but not the waltz so I am determined to learn this dance soon. More free alcohol, whiskey again that I love but I gave it to my friend. A week later my son comes home with two bottles of red wine from a customer. I love red wine and we opened itto add to the bolognaise. I waited three hours but could not resist the temptation of an open bottle of red wine in the house. I really enjoyed it but I did feel quite rouge for the next two days. This was on Friday and this isnMondY night and I have just had the second bottle . What now, do I try to continue with my HSM? I only lasted four and a half weeks.

Being bored and then having adventures

Last Friday I was still full of the cold and had a chesty cough and in the evening I was so bored. Usually I would go for a walk or do something but I was too wheezy and ended up pacing around the house. This was thhe second time that I really felt like I would love a glass or more like a bottle of red wine. I was very grumpy and moaned to my poor friend on the phone for a while. Now it is Wednesday and I am almost better and just spent the last 2 days up near Balmoral. I am so excited and feel a new ad entire coming on. I was paid off from my old job in local government after nearly 30 years last August. Since then I have had a little p/t work which has been fun but was looking for something different. [...]

Temptation and should I

Forgot to mention that in my first two weeks I have won 2 bottles of red wine, my favourite drink and been offered a complimentary whiskey at a ‘meet the author’ event. I thought it was a sensible alcohol free event. Also a new friend told me she has a huge whiskey collection and offered to let me try 7 different kinds of Talisker whiskey, my favourite whiskey. Am I being tested? I found it really funny and no I did not give in to temptation. I must be finally growing up at the age of 48 and it feels good. Oh yes and my cousin who I haven’t sen in 3 years bumped into me and offered me free use of her flat in Dublin, Guiness! I have been in Ireland before and for all sorts of reasons never had one and I swore if I ever went back [...]

Day 17 in Aberdeen Scotland

Inhave been looking for more Scottish based HSMers but hard to find at the moment. I have put ‘Aberdeen’ and ‘ ‘Scotland’ in my post title so maybe others will find me. It is interesting to read Australian and New Zealand posts but more interesting to find people in a similar situation to myself. I find this with age too. My concerns about my drinking have changed over time from total unconcern, to realising I was binge drinking and putting myself in risky situations and now I drink nearly every day but not on such a massive scale each session. It is still worryingly well over recommended limits and was regularly a whole bottle of red wine. I qam still finding the whole process very easy even on nights out. I have been out a lot recently and not drinking has not bothered me at all. I think I have [...]
